In addition to his performing, John Paul is in high demand as a teacher of conducting.

John Paul’s passion for conducting extends far beyond the opera pit and concert stage. His teaching style is holistic and tailored to the individual, allowing him not only to pass on the wealth of knowledge he has received in his own training, but to develop each student’s unique attributes. As a conducting teacher, John Paul has taught both privately and in classes organised for undergraduate students at the Royal College of Music. He has been trained by some of the greatest conducting teachers worldwide, including Toby Purser, Peter Stark, and Howard Williams at the RCM, Hynek Farkač at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and masterclasses with, among others, Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Roger Norrington, Colin Metters, and Martyn Brabbins. This makes him part of a conducting and teaching lineage that includes Ilya Musin, George Hurst, Norman del Mar, Vaclav Neumann, and Pierre Monteux.

Building strong foundations in conducting technique and score learning are at the centre of John Paul’s teaching approach.
